Depending on the model of your Garmin GPS device will determine how to load music onto the device.

In the case of the nuvi series, you can either load music onto an SD Card or directly onto the device. From here, you have three ways to copy the music over.

Before we get to that, it should be noted that only MP3 music files are supported by Garmin devices. This means music you purchased from the iTunes Store and music ripped with the default settings in iTunes and Windows Media Player (AAC and WMA files) cannot be played back. You will need to change their settings to rip files from CDs as MP3.

If you're using Windows Media Player 11, click on the Sync tab at the top, select your SD Card or Garmin device from the right side of the window, drag the songs and/or playlist you want on the device from the left into the Sync List on the right, and then click Start Sync.

If you're using iTunes, find the songs you want in your iTunes Library and drag it onto the SD Card or Garmin device in the Windows Explorer. It will start copying the song over to the card or device.

You can also manually copy songs from the Windows Explorer onto the SD Card or Garmin device.

Whichever method you use it is IMPORTANT that you do not copy the music files into folders. The MP3 files must be in the root / top folder of the SD Card or Garmin device.

Sadly, I cannot respond on the G1 Phone, but I am sure it is a similar situation as for getting music onto the device.

You can rent one from car companies for Costa Rica but not for Nicaragua and Guatemala, but it will cost you per day. And you don't get to keep the GPS map for future travels or updates with car rental GPS and if you lose the device they will charge you. The alternative is cheaper. Actually, I did something to adjust the springs on the buttom of the batteries hole, then the device can not work, I think the electrical cable inside the device has been disconnected by my action. I don't have sufficient tools to open it.

The model of the device is really old (Garmin GPS 40, 1994), the manufacturer no longer supplys service, so I would like to find a service workshop for general electrical repaire, thanks

Garmin offer an excellent out of warranty service arrangement, but this model is just too old as you say !

If you have simply broken a battery connection or disconnected a wire inside then just about any TV repair shop should be able to do the job. The fix would be obvious and they would need no knowledge of GPS circuits. Yellow Pages is the place to look.

But if you have damaged the circuit board itself then it would require specialist knowledge and it's just too old to be supported.

Did anyone ever hear of hardwiring the unit. Seems to be very few people with any imagination or ingenuity. All you need to do is cut the cigarette lighter end off, ground one wire to your chassis, and find a wire that is hot when the key is on and splice the hot wire from the GPS in to that. Tak

Actually you should have purchase the newelectronx gps with lorry for truck on it. it one of the most advanced gps system for truckers and it has mp3 player, tts, movie player, flash player, photo viewer, back up camera connector, the screen is 5 inches, and some other cool stuff. but keep the garmin and see how it works for you, remember map updates are going to cost you at least $50 to $99 per update.

Depends on what you need it to do. If you're traveling in the US then any GPS will work. You start running into problems when you leave the "lower 48" for Mexico or Canada. Just make sure to keep it updated (Garmin sells lifetime updates fairly cheap) and see if it can be expanded to Mexico or Canada if you're traveling there.
